This article is based on data from the 2018-2019 debate season, collected by Inko Bovenzi.
Based on our pre-ToC rankings, we calculated the average (mean) ELO rating for each tournament with results on Tabroom for the 2018-2019 year. Results are as follows:
Some interesting findings:
Higher bid level tournaments generally have a stronger average team strength. This is despite the fact that higher bid level tournaments generally have more entries, which would presumably dilute the pool.
The tournaments with the strongest average team by bid level are: Octafinal - Glenbrooks, Quarterfinal - Presentation, Semifinal - Scarsdale, Final - Colleyville
The tournaments with the weakest average team by bid level are: Octafinal = Princeton, Quarterfinal - Dowling, Semifinal - Nova, Final - Lewis and Clarke
The gap between the average strength of a team at Glenbrooks versus a team at Lewis and Clarke is not insignificant. While the average team at Glenbrooks would be ranked 233rd in our rankings, the average team at Lewis and Clarke would be ranked 1220th.
